ABSTRACT

The chapter notes that a transition to a sustainable energy system requires a transformation of the economic arrangements by which energy is bought and sold, and investments are made. Science and Technology Studies (STS) scholars have developed a way of studying such arrangements as agencements – configurations of technology, knowledge, rules, and practices. Rather than beginning with well-defined goods and market participants, as in economics, the approach examines the way that those elements of economic exchanges are constructed. Using two examples from the author’s research, the chapter shows how market agencements are critical to achieving a rapid and just energy transition.
