ABSTRACT
This concluding chapter reflects on the diversity of CES understandings and approaches in the Handbook and reflects on the role for CES in current and future works in sustainability science. Next steps for CES are proposed, with three identified as the most important: re-envisioning CES as relational; developing a coherent way to discuss CES and why they matter; and integration of CES with other frameworks for environmental decision-making. The chapter briefly reflects on these three “paths forward” and how the work in this volume contributes to those paths.
