ABSTRACT

Architectural design of residential care homes for people living with dementia has been a subject of research for the last 50 years. Architects, gerontologists, geriatricians, psychologists, and designers have developed several models to assist this work, and these models have been more or less implemented and evaluated. Research results in this field question the epistemological background of evidence-based design. This chapter proposes a framework to implement architectural design based on the concept of proof of care. It discusses the need for involvement of people living with dementia, their life partners, and the professional caregivers at each step of environmental design conception.
