ABSTRACT
Using the methodology proposed by the World Atlas of Desertification, this chapter addresses land degradation in the Sahel as a complex and multidimensional issue. The authors have identified patterns of human–environment interactions that will likely lead to land degradation. By combining spatial indicators of these patterns with land productivity dynamics derived from Earth Observation data, this chapter highlights zones of probable ongoing land degradation. The analysis reveals significant variability across the Sahel, with a higher concentration of issues in the southern regions, where human activities place greater stress on natural resources. The study underscores the need for sustainable land management practices to mitigate conflicts and ensure the long-term viability of agricultural and pastoral livelihoods in the region.
