ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we provide an examination of photo-elicitation as a participatory data collection method in the field of sport and physical activity research. Photo-elicitation is a data collection method in which researchers use one or more visuals in a research interview as a prompt to initiate discussions with participants. These visuals can either be researcher-driven, participant-driven, or a combination of both. The chapter begins with an overview of the method’s development, its key thinkers, and its current applications in sport and physical activity research. We then provide a comprehensive guide to employing the three variations of photo-elicitation and offer a case study which utilized a combined approach to investigate Paralympic athletes’ understandings of discourses of disability within their media representation. Finally, the chapter concludes with a discussion of the challenges and opportunities for scholars utilizing this method in the field of sport and physical activity research.
