ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we introduce the method of social media post–elicitation, an adapted form of photo-elicitation that has gained traction within the study of sport and physical activity. This participatory research method involves inviting individuals to share and discuss posts from their social media account to learn more about their social world and the communities in which they are involved. Using this participatory tool, researchers can have meaningful engagement with community members and co-create findings that can be put into action to directly affect those involved in the research. We argue that this method can enable researchers the unique opportunity to move beyond the visual content of a post to explore additional aspects of data, which can allow researchers the opportunity to capture more nuanced understandings about the participants and their social worlds.
