ABSTRACT

Over the last two decades, there has been a noticeable increase in the use of participatory approaches, such as community-based participatory research (CBPR), by sport and physical activity researchers. However, despite CBPR users’ goals of fully engaging community members in the research process, there is a significant underrepresentation of community members in data analysis and authorship in the research that has been produced from these efforts. In this chapter, we review the possible reasons researchers may omit community members from data analysis and authorship, we provide examples of how researchers can include community members in these practices, and we discuss related challenges and opportunities to equip researchers to enable community members’ full engagement in sport and physical activity-related CBPR.
