ABSTRACT

Central to participatory action research (PAR) is the effective and democratic collaboration of diverse project partners, all of whom bring different experiences, knowledges, and expectations to the research process. Yet, building and maintaining partnerships that centre trust, reciprocity, and democracy is fraught with complexities. In this chapter, we begin by providing an overview of research partnerships within PAR. We then draw from the literature and multiple stakeholder reflections from our own Sport for Development Youth Participatory Action Research study to identify key considerations in developing and negotiating partnerships in participatory work and to critically explore associated challenges and opportunities. In so doing, we expand on critical debates and open up space for honest discussion between stakeholders on the relational aspects of PAR.
