ABSTRACT
The objective of this chapter is to examine the implications of this transition for India, in terms of broad macroeconomic indicators. As India's economy transitions away from coal, the sector will face the direct economic effect of the transition. In this chapter, we will analyse the importance of coal for the economy. Some measures of the contribution of coal to air quality and emissions will also be provided.
Many sectors in India are directly or indirectly connected to coal; these sectors are likely to be affected as well. In this chapter, we will attempt to examine all such linkages with coal and underline the spillover effect of the coal transition into other sectors. We will focus on examining not only the cost associated with phasing out coal but also the cost of bringing in renewables.
Moreover, little attention has been paid to examining the spatial dimension of the transition process across Indian states. The present paper attempts to study the detailed energy composition of the two major coal-producing states of India viz. Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Further, the study will try to identify the potential alternative energy sectors across these two states.
