ABSTRACT

The conclusion chapter synthesizes the book's theoretical and empirical contributions, arguing that it opens a new research domain by extending collaborative planning studies into authoritarian contexts and examining how digital technologies reshape power relations and public spheres. It identifies four key directions for future research. First, as this book focuses on major Chinese cities, further studies should explore collaborative planning across more diverse settings, including smaller Chinese cities, rural areas, and democratic countries. Second, we call for a pragmatic approach to collaborative planning that emphasizes problem-oriented, context-sensitive institutional design and gives balanced attention to both planning processes and outcomes. Third, the growing influence of digital technologies on power relations and citizen participation warrants deeper investigation, particularly regarding how digital informal participation can be systematically integrated into formal participatory mechanisms. Finally, future research should examine both the opportunities and risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in collaborative planning and consider how technological innovation can be aligned with accountability mechanisms to safeguard more inclusive and sustainable urban futures.
