ABSTRACT

As society evolves so does hypnosis. In this final chapter, a diverse group of authors speculate about the “growing edge” of hypnosis. We consider hypnosis as, all together, a social construct, a methodology, and a cultural phenomenology. Within this framing, we distill some essential and distinctive features of hypnotic practice and experiences (relatedness, responsivity, extraordinariness) that represent its sustained core and power to affect us. Generally, we imagine that the co-evolution of these characteristics is projecting toward more idiosyncratic, person-based, systemic, integrative, and effective applications. We also explore exciting challenges and opportunities in the biological and social sciences, professional education, and clinical utility of hypnosis.
