ABSTRACT

Higher education graduates are critical to a sustainable future. Sustainability, or ‘green’, jobs and careers are required, and our economies are likely to be reframed by the demand for such employment, and the skills that must be developed for them. Universities can lead positive change through their graduates. We can incorporate sustainability knowledge, skills and competencies into the curricula and co-curricular activities that form the student experience. Graduate-focused, project-based, authentic assessments demonstrate how we can support graduate competency development. Student membership organisations undertake innovative work. Inspirational student and graduate case studies in leadership, research, entrepreneurship, law, business and community work beautifully illustrate how individuals can channel their passion for a sustainable future into richly rewarding careers. The transformative effects can have ripples across and beyond the higher education sector. Future, intertwined challenges will face our current and future students as they attempt to navigate this complex, unpredictable and rapidly changing world during and after university life.
