ABSTRACT
Leadership and governance for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within universities play a crucial role in supporting the individual and societal transformation necessary to create a better future. UNESCO advocates a whole-institution approach to ESD, best supported by leadership and governance mechanisms to ensure that institutional ESD commitments are explicit and realised. Despite barriers to achieving ESD in UK universities at a political and institutional level, leadership for ESD can be achieved through a variety of roles, functions, and processes. This chapter explores how to support embedding of ESD leadership at different levels, recognising that there are many ways in which ESD may be achieved and many different forms of leadership.
