ABSTRACT
Lisbon benefits from privileged climatic conditions, both for its geographical location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean and for its topography, marked by the seven hills that provide the city with a variety of solar exposures. It is these characteristics that allow a high diversity of tree species due to different biogeographic regions of the city.
This study carried out in Lisbon shows an increase in street tree species richness 33 genera in 1929 to 140 genera in 2021. Diversity was higher in parishes with well-developed urbanization systems.
The i-Tree Eco software was applied to the Lisbon street trees 2021 inventory to quantify the ecosystem services (ES), namely carbon sequestration, pollution removal and avoided run-off. The tree species diversity and crown size, besides their invaluable aesthetic value, play a crucial role in urban ES. The ES for a sample of 6928 street trees were estimated at 62000 euros annually.
The assessment provides an opportunity for several key stakeholders to understand the importance and value of street trees in Lisbon.
