ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to survey historiographical development in contemporary Japan, paying attention to changes in the ideas of history spanning the period from the end of World War II (1945) to the present, namely the contemporary period. We focus on two concepts or entities, “nation-state” and “progressivism,” in unfolding our discussion. 1
