ABSTRACT
The challenge posed by migration in the Western Mediterranean Sea area is a significant concern for many countries in Africa and the European Union. This phenomenon results in a loss of human resources for the countries of origin, presents challenges for destination countries, and tragically results in loss of life for those who do not achieve their objectives, sometimes in the Sahara Desert, sometimes in the northern countries of the Maghreb region, or sometimes in the Strait of Gibraltar. In recent years, there has been an increase in migration flows in this area, primarily due to three factors: advancements in transportation technology, population growth in Africa, and ongoing economic and political instability in African countries. Analysis of these factors suggests that migration flows will continue to rise in the coming decades. As a result, addressing this complex issue requires a comprehensive approach that involves cooperation between the countries of origin and destination, as well as international organizations, to create solutions that promote safe, legal, and orderly migration while addressing the root causes of this phenomenon. By doing so, we can ensure that migration benefits both migrants and their countries of origin and destination, while mitigating the negative impacts that arise from irregular and unsafe migration.
