ABSTRACT
The use of chemical weapons during the civil war in Syria gave tragic evidence of the urgent need for more effective means to prevent the recurring of such events. This chapter deals with the main international law agreements against weapons of mass destruction, to assess their effectiveness in the Mediterranean States. While European States are parties to all these treaties, the lack of participation by some States in the Middle East raises concerns regarding international peace and security.
