ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter presents the considerations and trajectories that lead to a relational approach to memory practices in participatory memory work, in the context of digitalised media ecologies. The discussion focuses on core themes of participation, infrastructures, and modalities, and their potential contribution to the shaping of inclusive and open memory work through the figure of connectivity. The model of participatory memory work, conceptualised by the POEM research network, is introduced as a heuristic framework for studying and doing/undoing memory work as a relational practice. This includes the examination of ethics, emotions, media issues and literacy, affect, identity, legal and economic frameworks, organisational structures, digital media, and open knowledge. The conceptual spaces and connections between these themes provide the foundation for a research agenda on future memory work. Concurrently, they link the chapters of the books that support this approach to participatory memory work and illustrate its conceptual strength.
