ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the multifaceted dynamics of museum infrastructure extending beyond institutional and departmental boundaries. It addresses the methodological challenges encountered in delving into the backstage operations and practices of the museum staff who meticulously care for objects – the activities that underpin the public-facing practices of object display, engagement, and outreach. The chapter elucidates how an infrastructure studies approach can aid the critical examination of museum work from the perspective of those directly involved in daily operations. Analysing the case of digital transformation at a museum in Berlin, the chapter unveils a complex interplay of tensions, ambiguities, and local adaptations within museum settings. This interplay reflects ongoing negotiations between traditional heritage practices, the contemporary agenda of digital transformation, and the emergence of novel professional roles.
