ABSTRACT
The focus of this chapter is on the notion of Gender Smart Mobility. Gender Smart Mobility is a concept which was developed during an EU project on gender and diversity in Smart Transport with the ambition to rethink the social dimensions of Smart Mobility solutions. The concept, and the practice of it, aligns with the current UN Sustainable Development Goals linking green and climate friendly city developments with gender and social equality. In the chapter, we demonstrate how Gender Smart Mobility enables stakeholders, notably technical and planning staff in Danish municipalities, address Smart Mobility in ways that go beyond the dominant notions of what is ‘Smart’, centered around economy, growth, and technology. The chapter demonstrates how Gender Smart Mobility is a visionary, yet also complicated and multifaceted, concept to translate into practice. It shows how the visions of green mobility are met in daily municipal policymaking where transport and mobility have a low priority and where there is little tradition of addressing gender and diversity in local affairs. The chapter presents the lessons learned, the potential and resistances to embrace and practice the visions of Gender Smart Mobility and its aligned methods. The chapter raises the question of how municipal and citizens’ work on climate change politics can become an advantage for not only some groups but benefit the broader population, including how to collect and disseminate actions of linking green transport with social equality.
