ABSTRACT

Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson was, when interviewed in autumn 2024, the party leader of the political party, the Left-Green movement, and Minister of Social and Labour affairs in Iceland. He served as minister of environment and natural resources from 2017–2021 when Iceland, led by Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir, launched the wellbeing economy governments partnership (WEGo) with First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern. WEGo emphasised care for humans and nature and that wellbeing is based on several SDGs where the GDP of a country is only one of many indicators. Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson is an environmental scientist and has previously worked as the CEO for the Icelandic Environment Association. In 2024, the Icelandic government issued gendered state bonds, and became the first country in the world to do so.
