ABSTRACT

Marianne Borgen has been, variously, a local, city, and national politician since the mid 1970s, representing the Socialist Left Party (SV). Positioned to the left of Norwegian politics, SV is committed to social and economic justice, feminism, and addressing the climate change emergency. Mayor Borgen came to the mayoralty with a strong, professional background in children’s rights, and had been the Ombudsman for Children in Norway. Her approach to environmental issues was influenced by their impact of the lives of children and, under her tenure, Oslo developed impactful green transport and waste reduction programmes. Oslo was awarded European Green Capital status for 2019. Marianne Borgen resigned her position in 2023 ahead of the City elections, which were won by the Conservative Party, who appointed Anne Lindboe as mayor.
