ABSTRACT

How is meaning construed in music and is it possible for this meaning to be transferred to other sign systems in a process analogous to literary translation? These were the main questions motivating the Soundscapes course, held online in the Spring of 2022, under the auspices of the Experiential Translation network and the Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies (CETAPS) of Nova University in Lisbon. Framed by an account of the ‘new musicology’ and its culturalist approach to musical semiotics, this article reports upon the theoretical insights produced during the course and analyses some of the intersemiotic translations that resulted from the exercise.
