ABSTRACT

Planning for K12 educational systems and community development necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the demographic and socio-economic conditions of today’s youth population. The chapter explores demographic and geographic trends that impact community development, educational outcomes, and equity for youth. The chapter first synthesizes recent data on changing demographic conditions for youth and the increasing diversity of the K12 population. Second, it focuses on specific equity concerns pertaining to K12 segregation and the isolation of youth in challenging neighborhood environments. Third, the chapter synthesizes literature identifying ramifications for youth and schools in the aftermath of the pandemic. In the United States, notable demographic shifts are significantly altering the diversity and size of the youth population, while legacies of structural racism contribute to contemporary inequities in relation to segregation and environmental conditions. The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has directly impacted youth development, exacerbating challenges faced by students in educational settings.
