ABSTRACT
Alongside the compendium on the education of noble sons ( De eruditione filiorum nobelium , 1247/1249) by the Dominican scholar Vincent of Beauvais, written for the French king Louis IX the Saint and his wife queen Margaret of Provence, this chapter examines key misogynistic arguments against face painting that can be traced back to the Church Fathers. Although the concept of body care has its origin in God's act of creation, the Christian worldview considered female beauty and its allure to be a fundamental psychological issue of human nature, rendering it susceptible to manipulation and seduction.
