ABSTRACT
With the increasing importance of technology in our daily lives, it is crucial to ensure that the language used in these resources is gender sensitive and promotes equality. While recent efforts in technology highlight the significance of language in shaping social and cultural norms, there remains ample room for research. Specifically, the literature on gendered technology has yet to adequately explore minoritized languages. This chapter addresses this gap by examining gender-sensitive language usage in Galician versions of multiple apps and an ad-hoc corpus of translations into Galician by the machine translation (MT) systems Google Translate, Microsoft Bing Translator, and Yandex, the AI assistant You.com, the chatbot ChatGPT, and a group of translation students. The study explores gender-sensitive language strategies in apps, compares the translation decisions of MT systems and students concerning English gender-neutral words and expressions in Galician, and highlights challenges in preserving gender-neutral language in MT into Galician. The role of human translators in ensuring gender-sensitive language use in the human-machine era is particularly emphasized.
