ABSTRACT

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the creation of immersive video games, including gaming-based (proto-)metaverses – so-called “virtual worlds.” The advent of AI has made the development of these games more affordable, less labor-intensive, and potentially more inclusive. AI can generate realistic characters, dialogues, and environments, reducing the need for manual input. It can adapt to players’ actions, creating a more engaging and personalized gaming experience. This has led to the rise of virtual worlds that allow players to interact with each other and the environment, including AI-based avatars, in real-time – thus experiencing true “joint perception” in digital form. These virtual worlds offer immense potential for philanthropy. They can serve as platforms for fundraising, volunteering, and recruiting – just to name a few. For instance, charities can host virtual events or campaigns in these worlds, reaching a global audience at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods. Volunteers can contribute their time and skills from the comfort of their homes, while organizations can scout for talent from the game’s player base. Moreover, these virtual worlds can foster a sense of community, empathy, and global citizenship, aligning with the values of many philanthropic organizations. They can serve as spaces for dialogue and collaboration on pressing global issues, from climate change to social justice and mental health. The future of philanthropy lies in these AI-empowered virtual worlds, moving toward enabling true “joint perception” in digital dimensions.
