ABSTRACT

The chapter aims to explore the emerging field of data philanthropy (DP), focusing on the potential application of DP to develop artificial intelligence (AI) systems and the due diligence required by philanthropic organizations (POs). It addresses three primary aspects of AI application from a PO’s standpoint: international regulations and compliance, international organization (IO)’s role in data philanthropy, and collaboration governance to develop AI systems. Furthermore, the chapter identifies the resource-intensive nature and complexity of regulatory and risk management compliance as deterrents for POs to embrace AI applications at the same pace as technology firms. To minimize these compliance efforts, the chapter suggests for POs to leverage the role of IOs in DP as orchestrators, in addition to relying on IO’s standardized frameworks, providing compliance toolkits, and aggregating and coordinating disparate responses to the need for risk management of AI systems. The objective is to provide a comprehensive guide for POs to navigate the complex regulatory landscape while promoting ethical and inclusive AI through DP practices. The scope will be narrowed to focus on the challenges and opportunities of DP. Data ownership in the context of DP will also be addressed.
