ABSTRACT

The chapter argues that the philosophical literature on values and science improves research ethics education in three ways. First, it helps understand the epistemic, moral, and social justification of research ethical norms. Second, it clarifies how moral and social values should guide and constrain the core activities of scientific inquiry. Third, it calls attention to the strengths and weaknesses of institutional policies to increase awareness of the proper roles of moral and social values in science.
