ABSTRACT
The project entitled “productive Green Infrastructure for post-industrial urban regeneration (proGIreg)” aimed to implement eight different types of nature-based solutions (NBS) in specific post-industrial sites of four cities in Europe and China. One of the main goals of proGIreg was to monitor and assess the benefits produced by the implemented NBS.
In general, benefit assessment is obtained by applying a monitoring and impact evaluation plan, which identifies the temporal and spatial scales of interest, the main societal challenges to address, and the related key performance indicators (KPIs).
In this chapter, the strategy followed to develop the proGIreg monitoring and impact evaluation plan is presented. Lessons learned during the preparation of the monitoring and impact evaluation plan and its evolution during the project are also discussed. In proGIreg, to obtain an overview as comprehensive as possible of the benefits produced by the implemented NBS, four assessment domains were identified, related to socio-cultural inclusiveness, health and wellbeing, ecological and environmental restoration, and economy and labour market. Thus, in the following chapters, methods for the impact assessment of NBS benefits of social innovation and circular economy and for biodiversity and health are described, with related KPIs and case studies.
