ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the implementation of nature-based solutions (NBS) in the Zagreb Living Lab, specifically in the post-industrial area of Sesvete, as part of the proGIreg project. It highlights key initiatives such as the “City Gardens” project, which offers citizens free plots for sustainable urban gardening, and the development of a therapeutic garden designed for individuals with disabilities. This chapter also details the integration of green technologies, including a modular urban farm combining aquaponics with green roofs and walls. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and earthquakes, these initiatives have demonstrated the potential of NBS to enhance urban regeneration, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. This chapter underscores the importance of co-design processes involving local stakeholders and citizens, which have successfully fostered community engagement and acceptance of NBS. In addition, it discusses the challenges and opportunities in operationalizing NBS within urban planning and policy, offering insights into how these solutions can contribute to the broader regeneration of post-industrial urban areas, promoting sustainable development and community resilience. This chapter concludes by reflecting on the potential for scaling these solutions and their role in shaping the future development of Sesvete.
