ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the Turin Living Lab (LL), a key participant in the European Front-Runner Cities initiative, focusing on its role in testing nature-based solutions (NBS). Turin has transitioned from an automotive hub to an innovation and sustainability leader, exemplified by its extensive green infrastructure. The LL centers on the Mirafiori Sud district, a historically diverse working-class area undergoing urban regeneration with NBS. Local schools play a significant role in testing these solutions, empowering community involvement.

This chapter outlines seven NBS types implemented in Mirafiori Sud, including new soil, urban horticulture, aquaponics, green roofs and walls, green corridors, a public-private greening partnership, and pollinator biodiversity actions. Each NBS addresses specific district challenges and opportunities. Turin’s policy frameworks, aligned with the Green Deal and Global Biodiversity Framework, emphasize innovation, SME competitiveness, and low-carbon strategies. This chapter also discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the proGIreg project, noting the project’s adaptability and continued stakeholder engagement despite restrictions.

In conclusion, the Turin proGIreg project highlights the transformative impact of NBS on sustainable urban development, emphasizing citizen co-ownership and community-driven initiatives. This chapter provides insights into effective NBS implementation and future urban sustainability practices.
