ABSTRACT

This exploratory study is focused on students’ migration from India to Ukraine and Russia, two countries with the largest number of Indian students pursuing medicine, i.e., MBBS. This study uses qualitative interviews to explore the motivations of Indian students in taking up medicine outside India. The students were recruited through snowball sampling, and 20 in-depth interviews were conducted with Indian students studying medicine in Russia and Ukraine. The issue-focused analysis enabled us to demonstrate primary findings on certain understudied areas of Indian students’ migration, especially to the new geographies that are mentioned in this study. The study affirms the integral role played by family members of the students and their social networks in influencing the decision to study medicine abroad.
