ABSTRACT

“European Universities” are the most transformative endeavour in European Higher Education (HE) since the “Bologna Declaration.” Independently of the momentum the initiative has gathered, with 60 of these universities currently to be funded by the EU, the fact is that a lot of uncertainties prevail about their future governance models and how they will relate with national universities, in a context where Higher Education is a competence of member states. This chapter deals with future perspectives on European Universities governance, in a context where multiple EU-funded projects are currently supporting the implementation of these European Universities and some of the Alliances leading the process are at the same time setting up their own legal entities. This chapter presents the concrete case of one European University, FilmEU - The European University of Film and Media Arts, and discusses it in light of both different perspectives of HE governance models and also other concrete examples of higher education institutions (HEI) governance models. The chapter proposes a concrete governance model fit for purpose for European Universities and discusses its limits and affordances.
