ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the dynamic interplay between technologies, design, and creativity within school contexts. Through a review of existing research, the chapter examines how design-based learning can empower students by helping them to advance their creative capabilities with technology. It explores theoretical frameworks and models underpinning learning by design, highlighting the role of design thinking, metacognition, and human-centred design in shaping educational practices. Technologies for supporting design processes and digital creativity are identified, alongside considerations for their use. Pedagogical principles underpinning effective design-based learning environments are unpacked based on a synthesis of the research literature. Adaptation of design models is explored as a way for students to make their thinking visible and develop a higher order understanding of design processes.
