ABSTRACT
One cannot help but feel impressed and inspired by the 14 case studies presented in this volume, not only with the convictions and efforts of those who led and may continue to lead the projects, but also by their colleagues, members of communities and other stakeholders who embraced their aims and worked to achieve positive outcomes. The authors have been open about the challenges they faced, their successes, failures and concerns for the future of both the archaeological sites they study and the communities in their vicinity. We feel it best to leave readers to make their own evaluations and judgements about the approaches taken and outcomes achieved. Our task is to highlight common themes and provide our own reflections about the value, opportunities and challenges of using cultural heritage to support UN Sustainable Development Goals via community engagement and sustainable heritage tourism.
