ABSTRACT
The article presents a brief overview of the development of international environmental law of the sea, pointing to the importance of the Part XII of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in building the global legal system of the marine environmental protection. The relation of Part XII to other treaties on the protection of the marine environment is analysed and finally the reasons for longevity of the UNCLOS is examined, with special emphasis on the evolutionary interpretation.
