ABSTRACT
The notion of “urban buildings” calls for a new point of view on the public space, which the individual form of the building must always be in a direct relationship with the form of the city. Inspired by Giambattista Nolli’s graphic method, we intend to investigate the public form of the city to develop a new point of view on the design of contemporary urban places that respond to the new demands of public life and that explore an organic relationship between the parts of the urban fabric. Intervention in public space is today one of the great challenges of cities. We propose as a working hypothesis the formulation of a new cartography of the city’s “urban ground” that explores the representation of the public system as a representation of the structural form of the urban fabric. By understanding the public space system as a structure and the city as a context, the atlas and research project on “BUILDINGS” allowed us to understand the meaning of “urban building”, when it defines the form of the city and otherwise when it is determined by the shapes of the city, by the intersection of streets or even the configuration of the plots.
