ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how integrating smart concepts in mobility poses significant challenges to traditional urban planning paradigms, and it critically examines the complexities and implications of incorporating smart mobility approaches within sustainable urban planning frameworks. The chapter describes the dichotomy between the explorative, technology-driven nature of smart city initiatives and the normative, goal-oriented approach of urban planning. It further reveals a lack of contextualization and coherence in smart city endeavours, which often hinders their seamless integration into existing planning practices. Examining the relationship between smart and sustainable, the smart city is viewed as a vehicle through which other goals can be achieved. However, the question remains whether smart technologies are the most efficient way to foster sustainable mobility. The chapter presents recommendations for reconciling smart and sustainable urban mobility, emphasizing the need for rigorous evaluation and clarification of the added value of smart approaches.
