ABSTRACT
The chapter aims to provide a contextual understanding of the increasing immigration of high-skilled women to Canada with reference to the complex dynamics of gender relationships in Indian society. It presents an overview of the socio-historical, economic, and cultural framework of gender roles, equality, and gender equity; depicts the changing socio-demographics of women in India; and considers how those affect women’s ambitions, aspirations, and independence. Secondary data on recent Indian immigration to Canada demonstrates the shift towards more independent women applicants. The chapter includes findings from two research projects conducted during pandemic years that analysed the experiences of skilled Indian women immigrants to Canada and the motivations and challenges of Indian students studying overseas. The findings suggest that Indian women who migrate to Canada face a range of challenges related to their gender, race, and professional status, but they also highlight the resilience and resourcefulness of these women in navigating these challenges and achieving success in their new home.
