ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into the entrepreneurial endeavors of Janissaries residing in Crete and Istanbul, utilizing an analysis of Ottoman documents recovered from a Russian ship in 1825. Intercepted en route by Greek revolutionaries, the ship’s cargo, along with the documents, fell into the hands of Greek authorities. Through an examination of these Ottoman sources, the article aims to enhance our comprehension of the activities and daily lives of individuals operating within Janissary networks. Additionally, it seeks to illustrate how the 1821 Greek National Revolution engendered both imperatives and market opportunities for Muslim entrepreneurs operating under the protection of the Janissary regime.
