ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the Mess Mapping and Gigamapping tools as approaches for dealing with complexities in service design. This chapter will explore the similarities and differences between these two approaches. Both tools have similar bases, such as dealing with wicked problems, but there are also differences in terms of how the mapping itself is conducted. We show how these tools can be part of the everyday toolbox for service designers facing complexities in different fields, where it is difficult to understand all of the connections and ripple effects that different interventions may create. Both tools are excellent for opening connections and bridging silos, which are common challenges in designing services. Conversations between people, actors and stakeholders via mapping can locate the “pain” in the system, in other words issues that are not working properly. At the end of this chapter, we propose how Mess Mapping could be part of Gigamapping.
