ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 outlines the project, our position in the work, methodologies and the key terms disability and citizenship. It traces global north, south and African specific approaches to disability, before exploring the variability of disabilities and their hierarchies and how these may affect lived experiences of people with disabilities. Finally, it analyses the impact of governance on citizenship and belonging via policies like the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), particularly in African contexts.
