ABSTRACT
Qoheleth delves deeply into the study of the meaning of human existence. It does so from a critical stance by considering the burdensome situation humanity has faced throughout history. Beyond the initial calling that God directs toward humans at the beginning of Genesis, historical experience is marked by numerous difficulties. That is the central theme of Qoheleth, a book that is difficult to comprehend. The thematic density regarding the meaning of human labor that this wisdom book addresses compels us to attempt to unravel its profound meaning and enduring teaching. While it may not provide a complete answer from a Christian perspective, it is relevant in a broad and truly biblical vision. This chapter examines the traditional interpretation of Qoheleth (Origen, Bonaventure, and Luther), proposes an intertextual reading with the beginning of Genesis and the Song of Songs, and gathers contemporary research efforts on the book. In summary, the aim is to draw from a proper understanding of Qoheleth a proposal for addressing our understanding of work in the present day.
