ABSTRACT

On account mostly of anthropogenic factors, the world is changing at a speed at which we have difficulty adapting. Cities and the building industry have contributed to these changes partly as a result of a large amount of energy used and the greenhouse gases produced in the construction and use of buildings and spaces. In the last decades, much has been done to increase the energy efficiency in buildings, and some concerns have been raised about construction's carbon footprint. There seems to be a need to move on from efficiency to efficacy as additional factors are brought forth regarding the impact of anthropogenic actions, such as biodiversity loss, soil degradation, and desertification. Current research points to an evolutive approach from green to sustainable to restorative to regenerative design. This chapter presents current investigation into the moment that precedes architectural programming, its relationship with the business plan, and the resulting, more understandable, architectural project. By introducing environmental concerns at such early stages of a project, such as in programming, the act of building, and developing might become better equipped to reduce its environmental impact and create a valence for restorative action. In this manner, firstly, a brief framework will be presented, followed by identifying the variables and processes that can transform the univocal relation between the desire, the business plan, and the material outcome, the architectural programming, into a biunivocal relation. This discussion will go through policies and Sustainable Development Goals from Agenda 2030 to develop environmental benefits. The authors want to bear in mind the possibility of manoeuvering these terms within management bases, which might reorganize and help the environmental lifespan and overall impact of a project. This subject mirrors and emphasizes some rules and actions currently proposed by the European Union and the United Nation, to fight climate change.
