ABSTRACT
Just as data science tools help good-faith actors do valuable work, they can help inattentive actors do new forms of harm. Here, we explore how evaluators can play an essential role in ensuring that data science is employed ethically and equitably, both as a tool used by evaluators and as a component of programs under study. To that end, we provide a framework to help approach ethics and equity in data science, and we discuss ways to apply it. This chapter aims to prepare evaluators to align emerging technologies with collective values in a way that few practitioners can.
