ABSTRACT

Metaphysical explanation is generally considered to be a distinctive species of non-causal explanation, accounting for the way in which the less fundamental can be explained in terms of the more fundamental. Though talk of metaphysical explanation has become more familiar, one sometimes still encounters some suspicion about the notion. This chapter takes that suspicion seriously and explores three ways to develop it, drawing out some consequences that responding to the skeptic might have for our conception of metaphysical explanation. The first way to develop skepticism about metaphysical explanation is via skepticism about grounding; the second is via skepticism about objective explanation, and the third is via skepticism about “big-E” Explanation.
