ABSTRACT

In a dynamic global environment, climate change and sustainability have become critical factors that shape the future of urban planning. As a microcosm of society, university and college campuses resemble cities on a smaller scale. Understanding how to implement sustainable practices at the campus scale is a powerful tool for understanding how to successfully apply sustainable principles at a citywide scale. In this chapter, we contribute to the line of research on campus sustainability and conduct a case study on the International Campus of Zhejiang University (iZJU) in China, which is an exemplar of a sustainable campus globally. In our study, we explore the sustainable practices at iZJU as a living laboratory for sustainability and as a Sponge campus in a Sponge City. Overall, our study draws practical implications for how campuses can contribute towards creating model future cities that are sustainable, resilient, and smart.
