ABSTRACT

The United Nations General Assembly serves as the primary policymaking organ of the United Nations, playing a critical role in the creation and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In response to the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the UNGA initiated a negotiation process in 2013, which resulted in the adoption of the 2030 Agenda under resolution A/RES/70/1 in 2015. This negotiation process of the SDGs is deemed to be unique in multilateral decision-making. It involved member states as well as different types of non-state actors, such as youth, business and civil society. UNGA facilitated the process through an Open Working Group, which was later transitioned to intergovernmental negotiations. Since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, the UNGA has continuously reaffirmed its commitment to the SDGs.
