ABSTRACT

The World Bank is the premier development financier, providing loans, technical assistance and guarantees for developing states for economic growth and to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. It became the focus of transnational campaigns for its impacts on people and the environment and, over the decades, would establish an environmental and social framework to mitigate development impacts on people and place. It aims to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity and has agreed to align its lending to the Paris Agreement. The World Bank has taken on a role as a climate financier and governor and has become the interim host and secretariat for the new Fund for responding to Loss and Damage.
